Mirror Club Championships 11th November 2012

Warsash held the delayed Mirror Club Championship Race on Sunday 11 November - with prizes for first overall and first gaff rig boat. With some boats away, and forecast for very little wind, it was good to have 7 Mirrors take part. Jenny Lorimer / Jess Jarman and Charlotte Lockyer / Rosie Daniels were the favourites, with the Bruce / Jess Mills father / daughter combination outsiders. Jess Main, a top Oppie sailor, also joined the fleet to helm for Imogen Bellfield. Three races were held in very light winds. Jess and Imogen managed to win all the races, with Bruce and Jess second, and Jenny and Jess third. The closest races were between the two gaff rig boats with Robert Scanlon and Jake Bonsor managing to just beat Izzy Martin and Charlie Atkins. Well done to all - prizegiving Saturday 17 November at the clubhouse.

Results:

1. Jess Main and Imogen Bellfield>

2. Bruce and Jess Mills

3. Jenny Lorimer and Jess Jarman

4. Charlotte Lockyer and Rosie Daniels

5. Ollie and Hannah Wilson

6. Robert Scanlon and Jake Bonsor - first gaff boat

7. Izzy Martin and Charlie Atkins

Looking to next season anyone who is considering to move their children into Mirrors they will be most welcome - do give me a call on  07813314903 or chat to Andy Buchanan / Nick Daniels. 2012 has been really successful with Jenny Lorimer / Jess Jarman and Imogen Bellfield getting into the RYA National Junior Squad and Charlotte Lockyer / Rosie Daniels, Alice Buchanan / Izzy Martin and Oliver / Hannah Wilson all selected for the South National Youth Development Squad. We are now looking for the next generation to join Robert, Matthew, Izzy and the other relative newcomers into the Mirror fleet. There is plenty of good advice on the Mirror website for what to look for when buying a Mirror - or give me a call.

Crewsaver Mirror Nationwide Series – Warsash 8th/9th September

The Mirror fleet arrived at Warsash for the 4th Crewsaver sponsored Nationwide series event and the Mirror Southern Championships.  The sun came out to play but the wind was a little reluctant and didn't arrive until two hours after the proposed start time.  After lunch in the sun, the 26 strong fleet launched and fitted in three races back to back.  After tight racing and much place changing Sarah & George Richards were overnight leaders but on their heels in 2nd & 3rd place, also with nine points were Rory Odell & Lewis Bowen, and Max Odell & Finley Boon.

The fleet awoke to another beautiful warm day, but luckily as forecasted the winds filled in, just in time to sail to the race area and it enabled the racing to get underway by 11 o'clock in a gentle force 2. Katie Davies & Gemma Keers went on to take line honours follow by Max & Finley, the rest of the fleet were slow to finish as the wind died. By the time the entire fleet had completed race 4 the wind had shifted right by 90 degrees and increased in strength considerably.  The race officer quickly moved the course around and started race five. Sarah and George started at the port end of the line and led the race from start to finish. The wind had continued to increase and race six began,  Sarah and George rounded the Windward Mark first but were overtaken on the reach by Max and Finley who went on to win the race, followed by Sarah & George.

The fleet were honoured to have the Laser Olympic race officer Peter Knight and his team to run the excellent racing over the weekend, thank you. Also a big thank you to Warsash SC members for hosting a great event and organising supper on Saturday evening in the club.

1st Sarah & George Richards 9pts (1st Lady Helm)

2nd Max Odell & Finley Boon 9pts (1st Under 19 Helm)

3rd Katie Davies & Gemma Keers 18pts (1st Lady Helm & Crew)

4th Rory Odell & Lewis Bowen 19pts

7th Joanna Kalderon & Imogen Bellfield 33pts (1st Lady Helm & Crew outside top 6)

13th Jenny Lorimer & Jessica Jarman 62pts (1st Warsash SC boat)

 Mirror Class - MId-Winter Championship - Sunday 26 February

12 Mirrors took to the water on Sun 26 Feb, on the day that The Sun on Sunday was launched, and appropriately the sun was shining, although the wind was rather lacking! A three race series was run at Cat Head, with the fleet consisting of 6 Warsash boats, 4 from Itchenor and 1 each from Poole and Hill Head. The light breezes tested skills, and patience, with difficult conditions not helped with spring tides. It was good to see some new sailors from Warsash taking to the water - Alex and Annabel Darch borrowed a Class Association boat and Robert Scanlon crewed for one of the Itchenor boats. The winners with two wins and a second were Midge and Harriet Watkins from Poole, with Jo Kalderon and Ottille Spruit from Itchenor a close second and Patrick Taylor and Imogen Bellfield from Itchenor / Warsash third. Jenny Lorimer and Libby Farren-Price were the first Warsash boat in 5th and Dom Wyatt and Theo Banks from Warsash were the first boys (as the boys were the minority) outside the top 3 in 6th. A thank you to all the parents that helped run the event - and for so many boats turning up to make a really good start to the 2012 season. The next Mirror training session will be at Hill Head SC (due to the Spring Series) on Sunday 11 March.
