Warsash Sailing Club – Members Training 2012 - 2013
Warsash Sailing Club is a recognised training centre of the Royal Yachting Association (RYA). This allows the club to run and provide courses assessments and certificates for a number of sailing, power-boating and shore-based theory courses. During the year we will be offering courses in the following practical areas - first aid, powerboat level 2 (PB2) and safety boat driving, radio operators’ qualification (SRC), RYA dinghy instructor, RYA powerboat instructor course. In addition we are also running a series of sessions to improve and develop dinghy sailing skills both for the competent racer and for anyone wishing to participate in the club racing events. Our primary aim is to provide training and assessment for members to enable them to safely operate club powerboats, and hold relevant safety and regulatory qualifications. The powerboat courses are generally run over a weekend. The first aid, and radio operators courses are run midweek in the evenings. All club courses are run by qualified volunteer instructors and coaches all holding appropriate national governing body Royal Yachting Association qualifications.
Warsash Sailing Club training courses
WSC offers the following courses to members. The courses are available to club members, but priority will be given to those who are likely to support the clubs sailing activities especially those of the Sprats, Kippers, Cadets and club dinghy racing. For all these activities the attainment of the minimum of a level 2 powerboat certificate is required to operate a WSC support boats, a RHIB or Jaffa .
Practical boat driving courses start at 09:00 in Lobster Quay. You will require a packed lunch and can expect to finish around 16:30. Please ensure you have appropriate clothing, with hats and gloves, to stay warm and dry for the entire day afloat
Powerboat level 2 (PB2) planning – course fee £60.00
This course will introduce the newcomer to handling a fast planning power boat, including, boat and pre launch checks, basic powerboat handling skills at both low and high speed and how to plan a short coastal passage. This course is the minim level required to drive a club powerboat. Training and assessment is generally carried out in the fast planning rigid-hull inflatable boats (RHIB. All participants must supply a passport sized photograph at the start of the course.
Direct assessments (£40) can be conducted for experienced powerboat drivers and for those requiring an international certificate of competence (ICC) – please email the training team for more details. A written assessment is required for this course. Training and assessment can also be arranged for holders of a PB2 planning certificate who wish to also hold a PB2 displacement certificate - please email the training team for more details.
Powerboat level 2 (PB2) displacement – course fee £60.00
This course will introduce the newcomer to handling a displacement power boat, including, boat and pre launch checks, basic powerboat handling skills at both low and high speed and how to plan a short coastal passage. This course is the minim level required to drive the club displacement launches. Training and assessment is generally carried out in the displacement launches Lobster and Prawn. All participants must supply a passport sized photograph at the start of the course.
Direct assessments (£40) can be conducted for experienced powerboat drivers and for those requiring an international certificate of competence – please email the training team for more details. A written assessment is required for this course. All direct entry candidates must supply a passport sized photograph at the start of the course.
Jaffa and RHIB handling session – course fee £25.00
This course is an opportunity for anyone who would like to improve or update their power boat handling skills before the start of the season. Sessions will be held primarily in the clubs tiller steered ‘Jaffas’, but may also use the RHIB’s. Most of the time will be spent on the water improving general boat handling and manoeuvring skills, slow close quarters confidence building exercises. There is no certificate for this one day course.
Safety boat – course fee £60.00
The Safety boat course is a development from the PB2 requiring at least 1 years powerboat driving experience. It is designed to provide the skills necessary for those who wish to crew a safety boat during club racing or open meetings. The syllabus includes the safe rescue of crews from dinghies, powerboats, windsurfers and canoes; positioning to provide safety cover for racing, and a variety of methods to safely tow another boat.
Short Range Certificate (VHF) – course fee £60.00 + licence fee of £30.00 payable (to the RYA) on the second day of the course
This course is the replacement for the old VHF licence. It is held over two evenings and is the minimum qualification required to operate a VHF radio. There will be some pre-reading that must be completed before attending the course. There is a written assessment at the end of the course. Participants require two passport sized photographs as well as the licence fee for the RYA.
First Aid Certificate – course fee £60.00
This course is useful for anyone who goes out on the water and a requirement for those taking or continuing to hold RYA instructor qualifications. At the end of the course you will qualify for the RYA First Aid Certificate which is valid for 3 years. The course develops and enhances first aid skills for anyone who may be the first on the scene at an accident or incident. It provides you with the skills to deal with first aid incidents whilst aboard or around small craft from how to resuscitate someone to how to best deal with minor abrasions and major bleeds.
Dinghy boat handling – no charge
These courses are designed to improve and develop personal sailing skills and boat handling. The sessions are based on the water and will develop skills for both helm and crew. Exercises will include follow the leader, close quarters boat handling and use of all the boats equipment. There is no certificate at the end of this course, but your boat handling will have dramatically improved.
RYA Dinghy Instructor – no charge just commitment required to put back some time into teaching Warsash SC members.
This is a five day intensive training and assessment course for the RYA Dinghy Instructor qualification. The course is designed to provide the training for an experienced dinghy sailor to teach the RYA National Sailing Schemes. All participants must present proof of successful completion of the pre-entry requirements:- minimum of the RYA PB2 2 Certificate, current First Aid Certificate and successful completion of the Pre-entry Dinghy Instructor assessment.
RYA Powerboat Instructor no charge just commitment required to put back some time into teaching Warsash SC members.
To be eligible for this course candidates must have logged at least five seasons' experience of power boating, preferably in a range of boat types and sizes. Candidates will hold the RYA's Level 2 powerboat certificate, a VHF/SRC operators licence and a valid first aid certificate. No candidate under the age of 16 will be accepted for training. Prior to the training course, candidates must successfully complete a skills assessment, details of which can be arranged with the WSC Training Principal. This is a three day instructor course run by an RYA Powerboat Trainer and assessed by an independent Trainer. The course will consist of the principles of practical instruction, lesson planning, teaching styles, use of questioning, preparation and use of visual aids, assessment of students' learning, explanation and presentation of theory subjects, the structure of the scheme, planning progressive teaching sessions, preparation of boats and equipment, teaching methods to Level 2. There will be extensive work to complete in the evenings.

To apply for any of the courses listed please complete all aspects of the club application form. Application forms for all courses are available on the WSC internet site and on the notice boards in both Lobster Quay and Shore House.
Completed application forms should be accompanied with separate cheques for each course applied for and returned to the Club administrator in Shore House. On receipt of your application we will provide you with additional information by email.

In addition there is a sailing and training programme for the younger members through from the beginner Sprats and Kippers programmes to the dinghy class specific training with a focus on developing the skills required to sail Optimist, Pico, Mirror, Feva, and Topper to enable sailors to participate in Open events and Zone training sessions – more information on these programmes will follow in the sailing calendar for 2013.
